Challenge 5

'OUTSIDE THE BOX'

This challenge offers scope because of the many ways it can be interpreted. Some
concepts/ideas offer opportunities for creative expression, such as happiness; joy;
isolation; loneliness; frustration. The Title of images will be more important than ever as
an ideal way to signal the idea or concept.

Challenge Details

Digital Submission, Colour. Deadline:   Monday  7th Feb. 2022.  A Dropbox link will be sent out by the deadline date  specifically for uploads for this challenge.

Up to two images per entrant can be submitted.  Images should be no more than 3 years old please, an adjustment to our 2 year requirement because of Covid

All challenges are organised as a chance to gain valuable critique on our images from experienced judges.  For many the competitive element may be secondary.

‘Outside the Box’ offers a great opportunity to use creative skills, in the taking of the images and  in post processing.  Almost anything goes and they will be expected to be ‘out of the ordinary’ in some respect or another best achieved by expressing an idea or concept.

Some suggestions for this challenge

This challenge offers scope because of the many ways it can be interpreted.  Some concepts/ideas offer opportunities for creative expression, such as happiness; joy; isolation; loneliness; frustration. The Title of images will be more important than ever as an ideal way to signal the idea or concept.

It can help to:

  • Think freely, don’t be limited by ‘rules’

  • Think like there is no box

  • Find new ideas for your photography

  • Remove artificial boundaries you might place on yourself

  • Make a brave choice

  • Use the opportunity to experiment and ‘make’ an image

  • You don’t need multiple images to meet this challenge, but they can enable your  idea to be conveyed more easily

  • Evoke emotions through your image –

  • 2/20 rule or even the 2/100. Expect that only two images out of 20 or even out of  a 100 might be any good

  • Embrace the chance to experiment and where that process goes

  • Explore the creative possibilities of layers, blending modes and other tools in post processing.

Possible Inspiration:

  • A line of a poem

  • A Song

  • A line of a nursery rhyme (hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle and other lines in the same rhyme!).

  • People and subtle body language to express feelings plus other objects

  • Experiences of lockdown – ideas to convey lockdown

  • Humorous situations

  • Bizarre or surreal situations, objects in strange places, etc.

Find  different ways to be highly creative, use new techniques  and most of all have FUN

Please note the following. Images will be judged on:

  • Composition and how well an image fits the theme

  • Impact

  • Technical Skills

  • Sharp where it needs to be, unless it is clearly not intended to be by the photographer.
